The southern Sea of Cortez is a long-time favorite UnderseaX gay & lesbian scuba destination for several reasons: proximity and short flights, a stunning landscape where the desert meets the sea, unique and beautiful endemic fish species, plus the possibility of big animal encounters such as sea lions, hammerheads, mantas, jacks, bull sharks, and maybe even whale sharks and more.
For a number of years there was no liveaboard in this area that met our standards, until Nautilus Gallant Lady was inaugurated last year. We've chartered her on a special seven-night Southern Sea of Cortez LGBT charter expedition than includes much more than her standard Cabo Pulmo itinerary.
We'll board Gallant Lady in easy-to-reach Loreto, Baja California, where the fun begins immediately as we frolic with sea lions on our dives at the islands just offshore. Conditions permitting, we can motor a bit north for a spooky exploratory night dive in acrylic cages to search for Humboldt squid.
We'll continue diving the rocky reefs and islands of the Sea of Cortez as we head south towards the La Paz area and famous dive sites like El Bajo, where we've spotted hammerheads on several past land-based expeditions. It will be a real treat to dive these offshore sites from a liveaboard and avoid long crossings in small boats.
If the juvenile whale sharks are around, we'll cruise into the bay of La Paz for a chance to snorkel with them, using a local operator. From La Paz, we'll make our way south to the protected marine park of Cabo Pulmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here we are nearly certain to dive with the schooling jacks that make great wide-angle shots with a diver for scale. This area also offers a chance to dive with bull sharks, and is one of the very few true coral reefs to be found on the west coast of the Americas.
Our expedition draws to a close in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas, so feel free to add a few extra nights here, whether you want to party at Cabo Wabo, relax or golf at a beach resort along the Corridor between here and San Jose del Cabo, or explore the charming small town of Todos Santos on the Pacific.
Some dive sites in the Sea of Cortez can be challenging due to currents and blue water ascents.
